Long Winter Lets

The cottage in Winter is the perfect place to relax and explore the area. We offer long winter lets through January to March, and prices are negotiable. We particularly recommend it for potential house buyers (as we have experience and can offer first-hand advice) or equally just for some quality time out.

Truffles

Note that there is a £25 charge per cubic metre of logs and you pay for replacement gas bottles. For Winter lets the Windmill is heated on all floors for which a small extra charge is made of £10 a week. There is ample parking at the front of the Windmill and there are two mountain bikes available.

Truffles - La Truffe

What is a truffle?

A truffle is a fungus, an underground growth of a mycelium which lives on the roots of the host tree. There are several sorts of truffle, but the Black Winter Truffle or Black Truffle of Quercy or of Perigord is the renown one. The general host tree is a young oak but it could be an ilex or a hazelnut tree. The truffle is born in the soil in May – June and develops during the summer and particularly in rainstorms in August. It begins to mature in the cold days of Autumn.

Truffle Hunting

Gathering the truffles

The truffles are generally harvested during December, January and February. Pigs and dogs are used to help locate the truffles, this is thanks to their sense of smell. Or alternatively the cultivator uses a brush to disturb the topsoil, and then looks out for the truffle-fly, which often lives above them.

The Truffle Market

The truffles are sold predominantly in the South West region of France in Cahors, Limogne and Lalbenque. The most important market being in Lalbenque, during the winter the market is held every Tuesday at 2:00pm. Prices have varied in recent years between 1000 and 2000 euros per kilo, this depends upon the rarity or abundance of the product.

Gastronomy

Thanks to its perfume and its unique taste the truffle remains one of the jewels of Quercynois and of French gastronomy.
